Action & Reaction October 19: The United States acknowledges that forces are on the ground and have been for some time. Media personnel worthy of their positions are in the minority! Those worthy understand that their right to know and inform the world stops when military forces and causes may be damaged and can be lost by unbounded leaks and speculation.

Retaliation Must Finalize The War & One measure of our civilization's civility is that its retaliation is actually self-defense of the future. The civilized world's retaliatory self-defensive actions will be precise and aimed accurately at the real perpetrators. There will be no rush to quickly lob a hand-full of rockets at the first plausible target. Instead, civilization will identify the perpetrators, track them down, and impose justice upon them. It is safer to understand our enemy before he pulls and aims his gun at us than to be caught looking down the barrel of his already drawn gun. This evil enemy has drawn and fired his guns at civilization for years. It is time for civilization to defend itself. To fail to defend civilization is not rational and it is itself uncivilized. |

So What? The media continues to espouse the power of Afghanistan's winters and fighting forces. It attempts to demoralize us on the homefront by repeating the mistaken notion that the great Soviet army was defeated in Afghanistan by these forces. Yes, the Soviet army was defeated, but not by these forces alone. It was defeated because it was backed by a disintegrating Soviet Union suffering politically and manifesting financial problems, was not well equipped, lacked a leadership structure, and Afghani national troops were assisted by the U. S. Today's Taliban consists of approximately 25,000 religious fanatics using mainly left-over Soviet and Chinese-made weapons that are in disrepair. They are cave dwellers and fighters trained in ad hoc camps to terrorize women, children and old men. They are not trained tacticians and strategists. They can be very deadly despite these factors. But allied forces of the civilized world led by the United States are using modern fighting methods, weapons and troops. The terrorist thugs will be defeated. The U. S. troops are trained, dedicated and defending their homeland, the United States of America -- a nation worth defending! We should recall the media's portrayal of Iraq's Republican Guard in 1990 and 1991. The Republican Guard was portrayed as a well trained, well-equipped fighting force of 50,000 dedicated regulars. In actuality, it turned out that Iraq's Republican Guard was best at raising white flags to surrender when fired upon. |

Cooperation Amongst Themselves & With The Allies London Times, November 18, 2001: "The plans were thrown into confusion yesterday, however, when Alliance commanders suggested that no more coalition troops would be welcome in the country. Jack Straw, the foreign secretary, telephoned Dr. Abdullah Abdullah, his Alliance counterpart, who said last night: "If you are talking about the presence of thousands of fighting troops from outside Afghanistan, this is a major issue which has to be discussed. The events of the past few days showed that the forces which were capable of doing the job on the ground were the forces of the [Alliance]." One minister confirmed there were now doubts over the plans for large numbers of British troops. However, Hoon insisted the problem would be resolved." On November 20 the Northern Alliance consented to meet with UN envoys to negotiate a surrender of Konduz and related transition topics. Two questions are forming dynamically: 1.) To what extent is the Northern Alliance capable of cooperating with the soon-to-arrive interim Afghani government? 2.) To what extent is the Northern Alliance capable of cooperating with the Allies now that victory over the Taliban is within reach? The Northern Alliance must remember: 1.) Its victory is actually the victory of Allied strategy, tactics, weapons, and especially, soldiers. It was not winning its fight until the sneak attack on September 11 mandated Allied retaliation that serendipitously aided the Northern Alliance cause. 2.) Its future existence must be within the multi-ethnic, multi-tribal blended factional government now forming and each element must work on that team to build a civilized, productive Afghanistan. This phase, the first segment of the War Against Terrorism, involved Afghanistan and defeated the Taliban. That defeat allowed the Northern Alliance to appear to have won back Afghanistan. The war's mission is to defeat terrorism globally. Afghanistan, simply the first battle front in the war, is being won for freedom. Its mission has not been to allow for a new set of civil wars to break out between Northern Alliance factions splintering apart to fight each other as well as factions of the new government. |
