JFK apologized and took responsibility for the Bay of Pigs
fiasco years before we knew of his pervasive involvement. And apologize he should have. He
approved the plan and specific details before the invasion, ordered invasion of a
sovereign nation, and plotted to overthrow its leader. ...And when the invasion was
in the midst of failing and hundreds of Cuban and American soldiers were dying, being
captured, and making frantic calls for air support and reinforcements, JFK pulled the
plug. |

JFK denied his men additional support. That act by JFK insured the death
and capture of hundreds of soldiers. That act by JFK ensured that the Bay of Pigs would
stand out as a major US military fiasco. JFK's failure to provide back up support for the
men he ordered to invade Cuba cost their lives and American prestige. |
| In stark contrast to JFK's actions, President Bush had nothing to do with -- and
was in no way associated with -- the planning or implementation of Iraqi prisoner
abuses. He did not condone the Iraqi prisoner abuses and upon learning of them he
ordered change and investigation. |
| JFK and RFK meddled with details and implemented a CIA plan to overthrow Castro.
They should have apologized. George Bush and Donald Rumsfeld, in waging the War Against
Terrorism, delegated down the chain of command. They apologized as they had to in today's
emotionalized, frenzied culture. They should now use the chain of command to weed out
unworthy officers and amoral enlisted personnel while continuing to keep the civilized
world civilized. |
